The memory of hundreds gone buildings is preserved by few photographic images. Perspective restitution with digital representation tools can be used today to reconstruct these buildings directly in 3D space. Digital representation has overcome many limitations that affected perspective restitution in the pre-digital era. In this paper the inner space of the church of San Michele in Trapani, destroyed at the end of the 50’, is reconstructed with the aid of three period photographic images. Digital technologies for architecture representation have strongly modified uses and rules inherited from a millennial tradition. In the initial development period CAD tools worked as electronic drafting machines and digital drawings were almost similar to hand-made drawings; plans, fronts, sections and the like. La restituzione prospettica appartiene di diritto al corpus disciplinare della geometria descrittiva, come problema inverso della prospettiva. The paper aims at discussing the accuracy of perspective restitution from view camera photos; view cameras are non-standard cameras frequently used in the past century for on field shooting of buildings and urban sites; this is why the reconstruction of lost buildings often deals with photos taken with a view camera. The reconstruction of gone, or never built buildings has ever been one of the preferred subjects of digital representation. Many researches have focused the reconstruction of buildings that were modified by human actions, as wars or demolitions, or by natural causes as earthquakes or decay. The paper presents the results of a research aiming at proving the efficacy of perspective restitution from photos for the reconstruction of buildings and sites that disappeared in the past century. This book explores perspective restitution from photographs for the reconstruction of buildings and urban sites that no longer exist or have suffered many alterations over time. Digital drawing and modelling tools overcome many of the limitations that, in the past, made perspective restitution from photographs inaccurate and inconvenient. Traditional drawing tools made perspective restitution from photographs difficult, especially when vanishing points appeared at a great distance from the image frame. La restituzione prospettica è stata pressoché ignorata nelle ricerche incentrate sulla ricostruzione di architetture e contesti urbani da foto d’archivio, a causa dell’ampio margine di approssimazione che caratterizzava il processo di restituzione condotto con gli strumenti tradizionali del disegno.
